Purandar Peas: Short Crop Cycle, Low Water Use Make It A Favourite Among Farmers

Purandar, 10th September 2026: The kharif pea season has picked up in Purandar taluka, with the crop witnessing strong demand from traders in Maharashtra and other states. Known for its sweet taste and quality, the locally grown ‘Purandar pea’ often fetches good prices in the market.

Peas are an important vegetable crop for farmers in Purandar as they require relatively less water and can be harvested within a short period. The crop generally becomes ready for harvesting in about 45 to 50 days, allowing farmers to generate income quickly.

Peas grown in Purandar are known for their distinctive pod shape, the number of peas in each pod and their naturally sweet taste. These qualities have helped the crop gain demand in markets beyond Pune.

Apart from local markets in Saswad and Dive, Purandar peas are supplied in large quantities to the Gultekdi market in Pune and the Vashi market in Mumbai. Traders from Mahad, Nashik and other states also visit the taluka to purchase the produce directly from farmers.

Some traders buy the crop directly from farms and make payments on the spot. This has reduced the need for farmers to transport their produce to distant markets and find buyers themselves.

Pea cultivation is mainly concentrated in the western parts of Purandar, including Garade, Hivre, Chambli, Bhivari, Bopgaon, Bhiwadi, Kodit, Askarwadi, Somardi and Patharwadi. Farmers in these areas mainly grow the M.P. Shri and Golden varieties.

The two-to-three-month pea season provides farmers with an important source of income. With its short crop cycle, lower water requirement and established market demand, pea cultivation continues to be a preferred crop among farmers in Purandar.
