Pune: RTO Launches Special Drive Against Private Buses Charging Excess Fares During Ganeshotsav
Pune, 11th September 2026: The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has launched a special inspection drive against private passenger buses allegedly charging excessive fares from passengers travelling during the Ganeshotsav period.
The drive will be conducted from September 11 to September 26, 2026, following complaints received by the RTO that some private travel operators and bus owners are charging passengers fares higher than the rates prescribed by the government.
Under the prescribed fare norms, private contract carriage buses cannot charge more than 50 per cent above the prevailing Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) fare for the corresponding category of bus. The fare charged by a private bus should therefore not exceed one-and-a-half times the applicable MSRTC passenger ticket fare.
The RTO has directed officials to conduct inspections of private travel operators and buses and take action against operators found violating the prescribed fare limits.
Regional Transport Officer Archana Gaikwad has also appealed to private bus owners and drivers to ensure that all vehicle-related documents are valid and comply with the applicable regulations.
Passengers who are charged excess fares or face any difficulties while travelling can lodge complaints with the RTO. Complainants have been asked to provide their name, mobile number and a photograph of the ticket while submitting their complaint.

The special drive is aimed at ensuring that passengers travelling to and from Pune during the Ganeshotsav festival are not subjected to unfair or excessive fares by private bus operators.
