Maharashtra FYJC Admissions: Nearly 8.85 Lakh Seats Remain Vacant After Multiple Rounds

Pune, 23rd September 2026: Nearly 8.85 lakh seats remain vacant in junior colleges across Maharashtra, more than four months after the Class 10 SSC results, even as the centralised First Year Junior College (FYJC) admission process continues.

The latest figures show that 8,84,888 seats are still unfilled out of a total intake of 22.48 lakh seats across 9,717 junior colleges in the state. So far, 13.63 lakh students have confirmed their admissions, according to data released by the State Centralised Admission Process (CAP) Committee.

This means nearly 39.35% of the total FYJC seats remain vacant.
The number is also higher than the vacancy recorded at a similar stage last year. In 2025, more than eight lakh seats were left vacant out of approximately 21.5 lakh seats after several rounds of admissions. Around 13.4 lakh students had secured admission, putting the vacancy rate at about 38%.

Multiple admission rounds fail to fill seats
The education department has continued to conduct admission rounds to accommodate students who are yet to secure seats. The FYJC portal recently opened Special Round 11, with registrations beginning on September 18.

So far, 15,61,667 students have registered for the FYJC admission process.

However, education professionals say the persistent vacancies point to a wider mismatch between the number of seats available and the number of students opting for junior college education through the centralised admission system.

Students exploring alternatives
The availability of options outside the conventional junior college route is also being cited as one factor behind the vacancies.
