Pune: Rs 1,826 Crore Infrastructure Push for Chakan and Hinjewadi Gets CM Fadnavis’ Nod

Pune, 28th September 2026: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has given in-principle approval to an integrated infrastructure development plan worth ₹1,400 crore for Chakan and a separate plan worth ₹426.54 crore for Hinjewadi to address traffic congestion and improve civic amenities.

The proposed works include road upgrades, stormwater drainage, public transport improvements, pedestrian safety measures, parking facilities, waste management and technology-based traffic monitoring.

The plans were presented at a meeting held at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai on Monday. Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and officials from various departments attended the meeting. Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi presented the proposals.

According to the plan presented at the meeting, work is scheduled to begin in December 2026. The administration aims to significantly improve traffic movement and drainage in Chakan before the 2027 monsoon.

Chakan to get road upgrades and stormwater drainage

The Chakan industrial area has a road network spanning approximately 498 km. After assessing traffic density, industrial importance, goods vehicle movement, road conditions, waterlogging, safety and connectivity, authorities have identified around 75 km of roads for improvement in the first phase.

The proposed works will include dedicated pedestrian pathways, stormwater drainage systems, traffic management measures and road safety improvements. Authorities plan to undertake the first phase within the existing right-of-way, without requiring land acquisition, by removing encroachments and making better use of available space.

The plan also proposes reserving space beneath roads for utility networks.

Waterlogging during the monsoon is a major concern in Chakan’s industrial belt. Encroachments along approximately 78 km of natural drainage channels have obstructed water flow, resulting in flooding at industrial units, traffic disruptions and, in some cases, suspension of factory operations.

To address the problem, the administration plans to clear natural drains, construct roadside stormwater drains, upgrade culverts and bridges, and develop water-storage facilities wherever required.

Officials said approximately 70-80% of the action to remove encroachments along the drains had been completed. The remaining obstructions will be removed in phases. The target is to restore the natural drainage channels and complete the drainage arrangements by June 2027.

The plan also includes approximately 38 km of roadside stormwater drains.

Around 500 additional buses proposed for Chakan

Traffic congestion in Chakan is partly attributed to the large number of employees and commuters travelling from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, many of whom use private vehicles.

The integrated plan proposes route-based bus services for workers travelling to Chakan from different parts of the Pune metropolitan region. According to the presentation, approximately 500 additional buses may be required to strengthen public transport and reduce dependence on private vehicles.

Authorities have also identified six major junctions for improvement. The proposed measures include scientific redesign of junctions, better turning arrangements based on traffic flow, and correction of unauthorised median openings on national highways, with U-turns permitted at designated locations.

Artificial intelligence-based traffic signals, cameras, radar systems, vehicle number plate recognition technology and a central control room are also proposed at key junctions to help reduce congestion and accidents.

Dedicated pedestrian routes planned for industrial workers

A survey of the Chakan industrial area found that several roads lack dedicated pedestrian pathways and safe road-crossing facilities, exposing workers to accident risks.

The problem is particularly significant when factory shifts end and large numbers of employees walk along roads.

The proposed road improvements will include dedicated footpaths, safer pedestrian crossings and traffic control measures. Pedestrian facilities are also proposed as part of the planned flyover works on the national highway.

Parking, power supply and waste management

The Chakan industrial area faces parking shortages for heavy vehicles, leading to trucks and other large vehicles being parked along roads.

The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has provided parking facilities at five locations. The administration plans to introduce measures to encourage greater use of these facilities and move heavy vehicles off roads.

The plan also proposes beautification and maintenance of road dividers with private-sector participation, along with public toilets and bus stops developed in collaboration with industrial establishments.

The industrial area’s water supply project is targeted for completion in 2027. A proposal has also been made to transfer the water supply scheme currently operated through the Chakan Industries Association to the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran.

On power supply, officials said the immediate shortfall had been addressed. MIDC has provided land for a proposed 100 MVA power substation, with construction scheduled to begin in December 2026.

For solid waste management, a centralised processing facility is proposed to handle waste from 14 villages and two municipal councils. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is expected to facilitate the system, with tenders prepared for waste processing. The target is to make the facility operational within eight to ten months.

AI-based traffic enforcement and deployment of security personnel

An AI-based traffic management and enforcement system is also planned for Chakan, Talegaon and Hinjewadi. The proposed system will coordinate with traffic police through a command-and-control centre to monitor traffic and act against violations.

Officials said approval had been given for CCTV surveillance and an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) project.

The Maharashtra Security Force is expected to provide 100 personnel for the Chakan area from October 1, 2026, to assist with traffic management.

Hinjewadi gets a separate ₹426.54 crore plan

A separate infrastructure plan worth ₹426.54 crore has been prepared for Hinjewadi, with a focus on reducing traffic congestion and improving civic facilities.

To address electricity supply problems in Hinjewadi, six acres of land have been made available. The process of deploying 100 Maharashtra Security Force personnel for traffic and other management requirements is also underway.

For waste management, the plan proposes initiating waste collection through either the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) or the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

The proposed projects are intended to address infrastructure challenges in two of the Pune region’s major industrial and IT hubs. Their impact will depend on the timely execution of the works and coordination among the agencies involved.
