Congress Renominates Jayant Asgaonkar For Pune Teachers’ Seat, Candidates For Nagpur And Amravati Also Announced

Pune, 3rd October 2026: The Congress has renominated sitting MLC Jayant Dinkar Asgaonkar for the Pune Division Teachers’ constituency in the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, while also announcing candidates for the Nagpur Graduates’ and Amravati Teachers’ seats.

Asgaonkar will seek another term from the Pune Teachers’ constituency, which is among five Legislative Council seats going to polls on October 23. The Congress has also renominated sitting MLC Abhijit Wanjari from the Nagpur Division Graduates’ constituency.

For the Amravati Teachers’ constituency, the party has fielded Professor Aditi Rishikesh Pohare, making her the only newcomer among the three Congress candidates.

The five seats up for election comprise the Pune, Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Graduates’ constituencies and Pune and Amravati Teachers’ constituencies. Polling will be held on October 23, with counting scheduled for October 27.

The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) — comprising the Congress, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) and Shiv Sena (UBT) — has announced plans to contest the polls in alliance. The seats include those currently represented by Satish Chavan from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Graduates, Arun Lad from Pune Graduates and Kiran Sarnaik from Amravati Teachers, whose terms end on December 6.

The last date for filing nominations is October 6, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until October 9.
