Pune: Lonavala Sees Heavy Tourist Rush, Traffic Congestion During Extended Holiday Weekend
Lonavala, 3rd October 2026: Lonavala witnessed a heavy influx of tourists over the extended holiday weekend, leading to severe traffic congestion on the Mumbai-Pune National Highway and several internal roads connecting popular tourist destinations.
The consecutive holidays, including Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 and the weekend, attracted large numbers of visitors to Lonavala, Khandala and other tourist spots in Maval taluka. The tourist rush has affected traffic movement in the region over the past two days, with long queues of vehicles reported in both directions on the Mumbai-Pune National Highway.
Popular destinations such as Bhushi Dam, Lion’s Point and Tungarli Dam witnessed a significant increase in footfall. In Khandala, tourists visited Rajmachi Garden, Khandala Lake, Duke’s Nose and the Missing Link Bridge. Lohagad Fort, Visapur Fort, Bhaja Caves and Karla Caves also attracted large crowds.
Haphazard Parking Adds to Traffic Congestion
The tourist influx has benefited hotels, restaurants, roadside vendors and other local businesses. However, the sharp increase in vehicular movement has also posed challenges for traffic management.
Several tourists have reportedly parked their vehicles along roadsides, reducing the available carriageway and contributing to congestion on the highway and approach roads.
The Valvan-Khandala stretch has also experienced traffic disruption due to roadside guava vendors. Vendors operating close to the highway reportedly attract motorists who stop to purchase guavas, with some vehicles being parked partly on the road and obstructing traffic.
Mapro Garden Area Sees Severe Congestion
The area around Mapro Garden and the Food Court at Valvan has witnessed particularly heavy congestion over the past two days. Long queues of vehicles have been reported on both sides of the Mumbai-Pune National Highway.
The absence of adequate parking arrangements and the resulting roadside parking have added to the traffic problems. The area has become a significant congestion point during peak tourist hours, causing delays for motorists.
Lack of Parking Infrastructure Raises Concerns
Lonavala, a popular tourist destination, sees a substantial increase in visitors during weekends and consecutive holidays. However, the lack of adequate dedicated parking facilities continues to be a concern.
Residents and commuters have also raised concerns about roadside encroachments by local businesses, which they say further reduce the available road space.
While the increase in tourist footfall has boosted business for local traders, the traffic situation has highlighted the need for improved parking infrastructure, stricter traffic regulation and coordinated management at major tourist destinations.
With Lonavala continuing to attract large crowds during weekends and holidays, better traffic planning and adequate parking arrangements are needed to reduce recurring congestion on the Mumbai-Pune highway and roads leading to popular tourist attractions.
