PMC Awaits State’s Written Order Before Implementing Water Cut in Pune
Pune, 6th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will take a decision on implementing a water cut only after receiving a written order from the state government, civic officials said. The civic body is expected to decide on the frequency and extent of the cut within a week of receiving the order.
PMC water supply department head Nandkishor Jagtap said the civic administration could not take a decision until the state’s written directive was received. Water resources minister Girish Mahajan had announced on Monday that water cuts would be implemented from October 16 across the state, including local bodies.
The state government has decided to introduce restrictions in view of rainfall, reservoir storage and the overall water situation across Maharashtra, with an emphasis on planning water use well in advance.
For Pune, although the combined storage in dams supplying water to the city is around one TMC lower than last year, officials said it could last until the end of July with proper planning by the water resources department and PMC.
The civic administration has already indicated that it is prepared to keep water supply shut for one day every week as a possible measure. Officials said such a schedule, if implemented from October, could help ensure adequate water availability during the summer.
Jagtap said the PMC would examine the state government’s written order and take a decision within a week of receiving it.
The mayor and senior civic office-bearers had been away on an overseas visit for about a week, while the civic commissioner is currently abroad. The mayor has returned and is expected to discuss the water-cut plan with the commissioner once the state order is received.
Jagtap said the PMC was prepared to implement a weekly shutdown of water supply if required, but the final decision would be taken only after the state government’s written directions are received.
