Pune, 06 October 2026: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has given Pune civic authorities two months to repair and maintain broken chambers along the Ramnadi, following a request by execution applicant Adv Krunaal Narayan Gharre in a pollution case concerning the river.

The order was passed by the NGT’s Pune bench during a hearing on September 28. Gharre, who appeared in person, sought two months for the respondents to undertake repairs and maintain the damaged chambers in the interim.

Allowing the request, the tribunal directed the respondents to take necessary action and observed that it “hope[s] that the Respondents will be complying this order sincerely.”

The respondents in the matter include the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), PMRDA, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Pune Zilla Parishad, and the Bhugaon and Bhukum gram panchayats.

During the hearing, PMC’s counsel sought an additional week to file a reply affidavit, which the tribunal granted as a “last opportunity”. PMRDA informed the tribunal that it had already filed its reply affidavit on September 23, while Bhugaon and Bhukum gram panchayats said they had filed their replies on August 17.

The tribunal directed that rejoinders, if any, be filed within two weeks. As no one appeared for Pune Zilla Parishad, the NGT directed that proceedings against it would continue “ex-parte.”

Gharre said the objective was to ensure that concrete work was undertaken to address pollution in the Ramnadi rather than allowing the matter to remain confined to allegations and counter-allegations.

“The two-month period is an opportunity for the administration to act. If the broken chambers are repaired and maintained and pollution in the Ramnadi is reduced, citizens will benefit directly,” Gharre said.

The NGT has listed the main matter for further consideration on November 26, 2026. It also disposed of an interlocutory application after Gharre informed the tribunal that he did not wish to pursue it.
