Pune, 6th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed acquiring 38,542 square metres of private land between Sangamwadi and Bund Garden Bridge to provide access to the Mula-Mutha riverfront development project.

The proposal, estimated at around ₹17.30 crore as per the 2025-26 Ready Reckoner rates, has been placed before the PMC Standing Committee by Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram. The administration has proposed initiating the land acquisition process under Section 126(2) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act (MRTP Act).

The move comes after the completion of several components of the Mula-Mutha Riverfront Development Project, where access to some stretches has remained a challenge due to the absence of suitable roads and approach routes.

The land is considered important for developing planned public amenities in the area, including a green belt, gardens, jogging tracks, an open-air gym, food stalls and parking facilities.

According to the PMC administration, the land is also required for relocating the affected crematorium at Sangamwadi and developing a large ‘Sangam Ghat’ near the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers.

The administration has faced difficulties in acquiring possession of the land as the owners have reportedly not cooperated with the process of document verification and land measurement. Officials have expressed concern that the delay could affect important components of the riverfront project.

The PMC has also warned that failure to secure the land could lead to increased dumping of debris and garbage along the riverbank. The administration has further raised concerns over the possibility of unauthorised constructions, marriage halls and hotels coming up in the area, potentially increasing the risk of river pollution and obstructing the development of planned public facilities.

In view of these concerns, the civic administration has proposed proceeding with formal land acquisition rather than relying solely on negotiations with the landowners.

The PMC expects that the proposed acquisition will help address the access-related issues and facilitate the development of pending components of the Mula-Mutha riverfront project in the Sangamwadi-Bund Garden stretch.
