18 Pune Activists Detained in Madhya Pradesh While Travelling to Delhi for Protest, Alleges CJP
Pune/Itarsi, 9th October 2026: Eighteen activists from Pune travelling to Delhi to participate in a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls on October 10 were allegedly detained by Madhya Pradesh police at Itarsi railway station, the City-based CJP (Citizens for Justice and Peace) said in a statement.
According to CJP, the activists, affiliated with the New Students and Youth Federation (NSYF), RRR Maharashtra and the All India Students’ Federation (AISF), were forcibly made to get off a train and taken to an undisclosed location reportedly being used as a detention centre. The organisation alleged that they were not taken to a police station.
In a post on X, CJP said the students were being taken away in a bus to an unknown location and questioned who had ordered their detention and where they were being taken.
CJP alleged that the action was an attempt to prevent people from participating in a public movement against the government. It also claimed that Maharashtra police had earlier attempted to stop activists at Jalgaon railway station, but they resisted the move.
Several organisations, including RRR, NSYF, the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), the Revolutionary Workers’ Party of India and the Communist Party of India, condemned the alleged detentions, according to the statement. They said they would continue their struggle to protect democratic rights.
