Lohgaon, 12th October 2026: A 31-year-old man, Akash Devdas Ghalot, died during treatment at Sassoon General Hospital on October 9, days after visiting Lohgaon police station in connection with a neighbourhood dispute.

His family has alleged that he was assaulted by police personnel at the station and has sought an independent investigation. Police, however, said no external injuries were found during the inquest or postmortem examination and that the final postmortem report is awaited.

According to a complaint submitted to the Pune police commissioner on October 9, Ghalot’s mother, Geeta Ghalot, alleged that her son told her and his sister before his death that senior police inspector Manisha Patil, assistant police inspector Santosh Shinde and other personnel had beaten him with sticks and belts and kicked and punched him at the police station.

The complaint stated that Ghalot’s health deteriorated on October 8, following which he was admitted to Sassoon Hospital. On the morning of October 9, he allegedly disclosed the assault to his mother and sister. According to the complaint, he said he had not spoken about the incident earlier because he had allegedly been threatened with imprisonment if he revealed what had happened.

Ghalot died at around noon on October 9.

Responding to the allegations, DCP (Zone 7) Abinash Kumar said the matter originated from a dispute between neighbours and housing society members on October 3, when cross non-cognisable (NC) complaints were registered.

Since the complaints were non-cognisable in nature, there was no question of taking the individuals into custody or arresting them, the DCP said. The parties had visited the police station to lodge complaints against each other and record their statements.

DCP Kumar said the individuals visited the police station on October 5 and their movements were recorded by the CCTV cameras installed on the premises. Family members and other society residents were also present at the time, he said.

According to the DCP, Ghalot was admitted to hospital on October 8 with complaints of a throat infection and elevated blood sugar levels. Medical records from Sassoon Hospital contain references to these conditions, he said.

Kumar further said no external injuries were found during the inquest proceedings or the postmortem examination. The postmortem was conducted with videography in the presence of the deceased’s relatives, he said. The final postmortem report has not yet been received, and further legal procedures are underway as per the rules.

In her complaint, Ghalot’s mother has sought an investigation by an independent senior police officer not associated with Lohgaon police station. She has also called for the preservation of CCTV footage from inside the station, its entrance and surrounding areas for October 5, along with station diary entries, duty registers, attendance records and other electronic evidence.

The family has requested scrutiny of the deceased’s medical records and postmortem findings, as well as statements from witnesses who may have information about the alleged assault. The complaint also calls for steps to protect family members and witnesses from possible pressure or intimidation.

The family has sought registration of a criminal case against those found responsible and legal action, including arrest if warranted. It has also threatened to stage a protest outside Lohgaon police station.
