Private Bus, Car Fares in Pune Set to Rise By 20-25% As Operators Cite Rising Fuel, Maintenance Costs
Pune, 23rd October 2026: Travel by private buses and cars in Pune is set to become costlier, with the Pune Bus and Car Owners Association announcing a proposed 20-25% fare hike, citing rising vehicle prices, diesel costs and operating expenses.
The revised fares for private buses, tourist vehicles and staff transport are expected to be implemented after the necessary process. School bus fares will also increase from the next academic year, with a proposal already submitted to the transport department.
Association president Rajan Junawane said fares had not been revised for five years, while vehicle maintenance, drivers’ salaries, RTO fitness charges and e-challan penalties had increased significantly.
“The cost of mini buses and tempo travellers has nearly doubled, while tyre prices have risen by around 50% and oil prices by 70-80%. The hike has become necessary to sustain the business,” said Tushar Jagtap, the association’s secretary.
The association provides transport for weddings, religious tours, excursions, corporate employees and schoolchildren. Its representatives also alleged that private operators were being denied facilities and relief extended to state-run transport services.
Kiran Desai, a member of the association, said operators were struggling with rising costs and inadequate government support. The association has urged the government to introduce an official fare chart for private vehicles, similar to the system for autorickshaws.
The proposed revision follows mounting concerns among operators over rising taxation, maintenance costs and stricter safety requirements, which they say are putting pressure on the viability of their businesses.
