Pune: Mercedes Crash Kills Delivery Worker; Tribunal Directs Owner, Insurer to Pay Rs 16.72L
Pune, 23rd October 2026: The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Pune has directed Serum Institute of India, owner of a Mercedes-Benz car, and its insurer, New India Assurance Company, to pay Rs 16.72 lakh in compensation to the elderly mother of a delivery worker who died after being run over by the car in Yerawada in June 2024.
The tribunal, presided over by member-judge S R Agarwal, ruled that the compensation could be paid jointly or separately by the car owner and the insurance company.
The deceased, Kedar Mohanrao Chavan (41), a resident of Padmavati, worked as a delivery executive with a private courier company. The accident occurred around 1pm on June 18, 2024, in front of the Golf Club in Yerawada.
Chavan was travelling from Golf Club Chowk towards the Yerawada Jail post office when his two-wheeler suddenly skidded, throwing him onto the road. A speeding Mercedes-Benz approaching from behind hit the two-wheeler and ran over him. Chavan sustained severe injuries and died during treatment.
Police registered a case against the car driver under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act and subsequently filed a chargesheet.
Chavan’s elderly mother, through her advocate V S Navale, filed a compensation claim before the tribunal against the car owner and the insurer. After examining the evidence and arguments presented by both sides, the tribunal concluded that the accident occurred due to the car driver’s negligence and ordered the compensation.
