Pune, 24th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has secured working permission to use 8,883.24 sqm of defence land at Ghorpadi to widen North Main Road, with civic chief Naval Kishore Ram saying the road will be expanded to 30 metres before the next monsoon.

“We got possession of defence land for widening North Main Road connecting Koregaon Park to Hadapsar railway station. This will provide major relief to daily commuters and boost businesses along the stretch,” Ram posted on X, thanking the chief minister and the Union defence ministry for their support.

The project involves widening the nearly 2km stretch between ABC Farm Chowk and Tadigutta Chowk from its existing width of around 15-18 metres to 30 metres to ease congestion along the Koregaon Park-Mundhwa corridor.

The defence ministry granted working permission on September 17 under the equal value infrastructure (EVI) arrangement. The land, in survey numbers 40 and 41, has been valued at Rs 29.86 crore. PMC will have to provide infrastructure of equivalent value and bear the entire cost of road widening and associated works, said Vikash Kumar, defence estates officer, Pune division.

PMC executive engineer Sachin Bagade said a portion of the work was in its final stage. The defence authorities will formally hand over the land after completing the required procedures, following which PMC will first undertake boundary wall work before widening the road. The process is expected to take a few weeks.

The road is a key link connecting Koregaon Park, Mundhwa, Magarpatta, Pune Cantonment, Kalyaninagar and Hadapsar railway station. PMC had proposed widening the stretch in December 2023, citing rising traffic volumes.
