Pune: Man Held Within 12 Hours For Duping ATM Users With Fake Payment App; Two Cases Solved
Pune, 31st October 2026: The Koregaon Park police arrested a 25-year-old autorickshaw driver within 12 hours of registering a case for allegedly cheating people depositing cash at bank ATMs by collecting money from them and pretending to transfer it through a fake payment application.
The accused, identified as Rohit Subhash Chavan, a resident of Fursungi, allegedly targeted people who approached cash deposit machines. He would offer to transfer money digitally in exchange for cash and then use a fake payment app to create the impression that the transaction had been completed, thereby cheating them.
According to the police, the arrest followed a tip-off received by the investigation team while probing a case registered at the Koregaon Park police station (FIR No. 177/2026) under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Acting on the information, a police team traced Chavan to Raj Mobile Shop near Shivaji Chowk in Kamshet. When approached, he allegedly attempted to flee but was apprehended by the team.
During interrogation, Chavan allegedly confessed to his involvement in the offence. Further investigation revealed that he had committed two similar crimes with the assistance of his associate, Karan Prakash Chavan, police said.
The police have solved two cases registered at the Koregaon Park and Kharadi police stations. They have seized property worth Rs 60,000, including a mobile phone and an autorickshaw. A search is underway for the absconding associate.
The operation was conducted under the guidance of senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajlaxmi Shivarkar and Koregaon Park senior inspector Vijaykumar Doke. Police sub-inspector Narendra Shinde is conducting further investigation.
