Pune: After 7-Year Wait, Shivajinagar ST Stand Set For Rs 825cr Makeover; To Emerge As Maharashtra’s Largest Transport Hub In 3-4 Years
Mumbai/Pune, 5th November 2026: The original Shivajinagar state transport (ST) bus stand is set to be redeveloped into Maharashtra’s largest modern bus terminal, as Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and Maha Metro signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the project on Wednesday. The proposed Rs 825-crore development will create an integrated transport hub connecting MSRTC buses, Pune Metro, railways, PMPML buses and auto-rickshaws.
The MoU was signed at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai in the presence of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, deputy chief ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, transport minister Pratap Sarnaik and Shivajinagar MLA Siddharth Shirole, among other officials.
The project will come up on the MSRTC’s 15,400sqm plot at Shivajinagar. While Maha Metro has already developed an underground Metro station on part of the land, the remaining approximately 10,500sqm will be used to build a modern bus terminal and commercial facilities. The project will be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model on a long-term lease.
According to Shirole, the project will have modern passenger waiting areas, bus parking facilities, a dedicated workshop and commercial spaces. The tender is expected to be floated in December, with construction scheduled to take three to four years.
Calling the MoU a major breakthrough, Shirole said on X, “For the past five years, I have been consistently pursuing the redevelopment and restoration of the Shivajinagar Bus Stand at its original location.” He added that ensuring the return of the facility to Shivajinagar had remained one of his key priorities.
The MLA said the integrated hub was expected to benefit more than one lakh passengers daily and improve connectivity for commuters travelling towards Khandesh, Marathwada, Vidarbha and Mumbai. “Most importantly, this project will integrate MSRTC, Pune Metro, Railways, PMPML and auto-rickshaw services, creating a major multimodal transport hub in the heart of Pune,” he said.
The Shivajinagar bus stand was shifted to the Aarey Dairy premises at Wakdewadi on December 30, 2019, to facilitate construction of the underground Metro station. Bus operations from the temporary location began on January 1, 2020. The relocation was initially planned for three years, but delays in redevelopment meant that passengers continued to use the temporary facility for nearly seven years, amid complaints about dust, heat and inadequate amenities.
The redevelopment will bring the bus stand back to its original location in a modernised form. However, commuters will have to wait for the tendering process and construction to be completed before the facility becomes operational.
