Pimpri Chinchwad, 5th November 2026: The issue of pollution in the Indrayani river has once again come into focus after thick layers of white toxic foam were spotted floating on the water in the Alandi stretch, raising concerns over the deteriorating condition of the river, which holds religious significance for lakhs of devotees.

The development has triggered concern among residents, particularly with a large influx of devotees expected in Alandi for the upcoming Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Sanjeevan Samadhi ceremony. Several devotees visit the river during the event and perform aachman (ritual sipping of water). However, the visible foam has raised questions about the possible health risks associated with contact with the polluted water.

Residents have questioned the lack of permanent measures to address the recurring pollution problem despite the river’s religious and local significance.

A resident said authorities should identify and control sources of sewage entering the river. She also demanded that water samples be collected immediately, tested and the findings made public. Strict action should be taken against those found releasing contaminated water into the river in violation of environmental norms, she said.

Residents said the Indrayani is not merely a water body but an integral part of the faith of lakhs of devotees and the lives of local communities. They have demanded that authorities establish the exact cause of the recurring white froth and take action against those responsible for polluting the river.
