Maharashtra Ranks Second Nationally in Renewable Energy Assessment For 2025-26
New Delhi, 5th November 2026: Maharashtra secured the second rank among general category states in the Renewable Energy State Assessment Framework (RE-SAF) for 2025-26, with its agricultural solarisation programme and power sector reforms earning national recognition.
Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan presented the award to minister of state for energy Meghna Sakore-Bordikar and additional chief secretary (energy) Abha Shukla at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 in New Delhi on Thursday. Union minister for new and renewable energy Pralhad Joshi and minister of state Shripad Yesso Naik were also present.
The state’s seven-pronged strategy focuses on expanding renewable energy generation, solarising agricultural power feeders, upgrading distribution infrastructure, introducing smart meters and digital grid management, undertaking policy reforms, promoting investment and energy storage, and improving the reliability and affordability of electricity supply.
A key component is the Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana (MSKVY) 2.0, under which decentralised solar power projects are being developed near agricultural feeders and substations to provide daytime electricity to farmers.
The scheme has an expanded target of 16,000MW, with the entire capacity awarded and around 7,000MW commissioned. More than 4,500 agricultural feeders and 1,200 substations have been solarised, benefiting over 18 lakh farmers, according to the energy department.
The state has also installed nearly 12 lakh standalone off-grid solar agricultural pumps under PM-KUSUM Component B and the Magel Tyala Saur Krushi Pump Yojana, accounting for about 65% of the country’s total installations. MSEDCL also installed 45,911 functional solar pumps in 30 days, an achievement recognised by Guinness World Records.
Maharashtra has secured the second position nationally in rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. MSEDCL has received over 16 lakh applications under the scheme, while the state’s overall rooftop solar capacity has crossed 7,100MW.
Other initiatives include the Saur Gram Yojana, under which 17 villages have been developed as fully solar-powered villages, and the SMART scheme to promote rooftop solar installations among households belonging to the below poverty line category.
The energy department said the recognition reflected the collective efforts of the state government and power sector agencies, including MSEDCL, MEDA, MSPGCL and MSETCL, in expanding renewable energy infrastructure and improving electricity access.
