Pune: Sinhagad Fort to Get Rs 9 Crore Makeover, Restoration of Three Historic Gates and New Museum Planned
Pune, 7th November 2026: The Archaeology Department has drawn up a Rs 9 crore conservation plan for Sinhagad Fort, focusing on repairing its historic structures, strengthening damaged fortifications and developing facilities to help visitors understand its history.
The proposed works will be funded through the District Planning Committee (DPC) and include repairs to three entrance gates, construction of a pedestrian pathway from the parking area to the memorial of Tanaji Malusare, restoration of the fortification walls and conservation of the historic Devtake structure. A museum dedicated to the fort’s history is also proposed.
District collector Jitendra Dudi said the tendering process for the proposed works had been initiated.
According to the Archaeology Department’s plan, a stone pathway stretching around 750 metres will be developed along the route leading to the fort. Repairs will also be undertaken to entrance gates 1, 2 and 3, along with the stone steps before and after the gates and the adjoining protective boundary walls.
The plan also proposes installing information and directional signboards across the fort in accordance with UNESCO guidelines to improve visitor access and provide historical context.
In the next phase, the department plans to repair around 315 running metres of damaged protected fortification walls.
Another major component is the proposed conversion of an old wada (traditional mansion) behind the samadhi of Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj into a museum. The facility will showcase the history of Sinhagad through information panels, exhibitions and digital displays.
The proposed information and exhibition centre will follow a traditional wada-style architectural design, in keeping with the historical character of the fort.
Conservation work will also be undertaken at Devtake, including repairs to its walls and roof to preserve the historic structure.
