Mumbai, 17th August 2023: When Laal Singh Chaddha, starring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, was released in August 2022, it failed to make a significant impact at the box office. Both critics and audiences were left unimpressed by the film. Mansoor Khan, Aamir’s cousin and director, has now disclosed that even the renowned filmmaker SS Rajamouli had informed Aamir about his perceived ‘overacting’ in the movie directed by Advait Chandan.

Mansoor had previously conveyed to Aamir that his performance in the Bollywood adaptation of the Hollywood classic “Forrest Gump” was overly exaggerated. However, it was Rajamouli’s critique that truly resonated with Aamir.

Mansoor reminisced about his conversation with Aamir, stating, “Aamir has a great sense of humour. One day he jokingly said to me, ‘When you told me it was over the top, I thought, okay, you are a subtle guy, and that’s why you might have felt that way. But when someone like Rajamouli tells me that I’m overacting, I thought to myself, if even he feels that way, then there must be something to it.'”

Mansoor, who directed Aamir in his successful debut film “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” (QSQT) in 1988, and who has now released a book titled “One: The Story of the Ultimate Myth,” mentioned that he had been straightforward in providing feedback to Aamir well before others.

He appreciated the script and acknowledged that Aamir’s expressions went too far. He noted that the character wasn’t meant to be portrayed as a jerk or someone with dyslexia, but rather as a slightly peculiar individual.

Mansoor added, “I loved Tom Hanks in the original ‘Forrest Gump.’ He was so restrained in his expressions and portrayal of the character. I did share this with Aamir.”

However, it was Rajamouli’s opinion, expressed during a screening of the 2022 film, that finally convinced the 58-year-old actor that his cousin’s assessment was correct.

Directed by Advait Chandan, Laal Singh Chaddha faced numerous controversies upon its August 2022 release and was also subjected to the prevailing “Boycott Bollywood” sentiment. Some sections of social media called for a boycott of the movie due to a resurfaced 2015 interview in which Aamir mentioned his consideration of moving out of India due to “growing intolerance.”

Mansoor, who directed Aamir in films like “Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander” and “Akele Hum Akele Tum,” highlighted that Aamir has always believed in the power of a good movie, regardless of challenges. He acknowledged that the failure of “Laal Singh Chaddha” was a setback for Aamir, but he remains committed and passionate about cinema.

Mansoor, who concluded his directorial career after the film “Josh” in 2000, admitted that he has “nightmares” about making films and that directing was never his lifelong journey.

Mansoor’s daughter, Zayn Marie Khan, is also an actor and has appeared in various projects.
