After Demise of Vijay Kumar, Vivek Kumar Gupta Takes Additional Charge as General Manager, Central Railway
Mumbai, 11th November 2025: Vivek Kumar Gupta, General Manager of Western Railway, has taken over additional charge as General Manager of Central Railway following the demise of General Manager Vijay Kumar earlier in the day. The appointment is effective from 11 November 2025.
An officer of the Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE) from the 1988 batch, Gupta is currently serving as General Manager of Western Railway, a position he assumed on 11 July 2025. Before that, he was Managing Director of the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the organization implementing India’s first Bullet Train Project.
During his career, Gupta has held several key positions in Indian Railways. As Principal Executive Director (Gati-Shakti) at the Railway Board, Ministry of Railways, he oversaw the integrated functioning of seven core departments Civil, Electrical, Signal & Telecommunication, Traffic, Finance, Planning, and Economic ensuring coordinated execution of projects under the PM Gati-Shakti initiative.
Gupta has served in senior roles across Western and Central Railways, including Chief Administrative Officer (Construction), Chief Track Engineer, Chief Bridge Engineer, and Divisional Railway Manager (DRM). In these positions, he was responsible for major infrastructure works such as new line construction, gauge conversion, doubling, multi-tracking, and bridge maintenance.
As Chief Engineer at the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), Gupta coordinated and implemented MUTP I, II, and III projects worth around ₹20,000 crore and led preparatory work for the ₹34,000 crore MUTP 3A project. His work involved close coordination with agencies including the World Bank, AIIB, MMRDA, CIDCO, and the Government of Maharashtra.
During his tenure as Divisional Railway Manager of Bhusaval Division from April 2019 to August 2021, he focused on operational efficiency, safety, infrastructure enhancement, and fiscal management.
