Pune, 13 July 2021: Incidents of inter-religion marriages are being termed as ‘Love Jihad’ and their families are being pressured not to have such marriages.

In this context, the activists of ‘Right to Love’ organization met the Inspector General of Registration Shravan Hardikar and demanded that notices of inter-religious marriages should not be published on the marriage registration portal.

In this regard, Adv. Vikas Shinde said, “Many inter-caste and inter-religious marriages have been cancelled in Maharashtra by misusing information on online web portals and using pressure tactics.  We brought to the notice of the Inspector General of Registration, how couples willing to do inter-religious marriages are being tortured by misusing information available on web portals.”

It is requested that the practice be stopped immediately as it is not legally binding to issue a notice of marriage in this manner.  Hardikar has responded positively to this, Shinde said.

He also said that a letter has been submitted on behalf of ‘Right to Love’ to the Chief Minister, Home Minister, Pune Police Commissioner, and Inspector General of Registration that cases labelled ‘Love Jihad’ should be investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
