Pune, 16th May 2024: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has nearly completed the installation of the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, aiming to enhance traffic management through advanced technology.

By the first week of June, the Expressway will be under the surveillance of ITMS. This system includes 218 CCTV cameras equipped with artificial intelligence (AI), strategically positioned throughout the Expressway. The implementation of these cameras is expected to streamline the work of traffic police by automatically detecting violations of 17 different traffic rules. Offenders caught by the ITMS will receive e-challans directly.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway witnesses the daily movement of approximately 60 thousand vehicles. Over recent years, the volume of traffic has surged significantly, leading to lengthy traffic congestions, especially on weekends and holidays. In response to this challenge, MSRDC devised a plan to modernize surveillance along the entire stretch of the highway.

A senior official from MSRDC stated that the ITMS installation will facilitate the identification of rule violators, such as lane cutters and speeders, enabling swift enforcement actions. This measure aims to mitigate accidents on the highway and expedite emergency response times to accident sites.

The control room equipped with ITMS will provide real-time information about every section of the highway, enabling authorities to efficiently manage traffic diversions during congestion. Additionally, a weather monitoring system has been installed at 11 locations along the expressway, ensuring drivers receive accurate weather updates, particularly crucial during the monsoon season.

MSRDC has undertaken several traffic blocks since the end of last year to facilitate the installation of ITMS equipment. With the imminent completion of this project, drivers can expect relief from traffic disruptions caused by ongoing construction activities.
