Pune, 16 Aug 2023: I was waiting for friends at a popular café and I couldn’t help but notice so many people who seemed to have no one but only themselves for company, busy sipping a cup of coffee and turning pages of their books. ‘This is a real good way to cope with loneliness’, I thought to myself.

Loneliness is a complex and often misunderstood emotion. ‘I’m surrounded by people, but I feel so lonely. Do you relate to this? A lot of you would. This feeling can be isolating and have a significant impact on one’s mental and emotional well-being; yes, that is true! Although loneliness is a common experience, it is also very subjective.

Whether someone feels lonely or not depends on their own temperament, personality, living situations, culture, etc, as well as how they interpret the triggers causing it.

So why do people feel lonely? Aren’t we all supposed to be hyper-connected in today’s world? Well, yes, most of us are very well connected to hundreds of people or more with the blessings of the always advancing tech.

Count the number of your connections on the popular social media sites or the contacts in your phone; definitely much much more than you can count on your fingertips, right? Now, how many of them are meaningful connections? You see the problem?

Modern lifestyles often prioritize productivity and busyness, leaving little time for deep connections. The lack of meaningful interactions can contribute to feelings of loneliness.

Feelings of unworthiness and insecurity can also hinder the ability to form quality connections. The presence of low self-esteem can lead to self-isolation and a sense of loneliness.

The fear of rejection can also prevent individuals from reaching out and forming such connections.

A major life change, a transition like moving to a new place can also contribute to this feeling.

Possible causes of loneliness are many, including social anxiety, trauma and even the lack of attention to the ‘self’.

Did you know that loneliness can be a risk factor for mental health issues?

To name a few, there can be an increased risk of depression and anxiety, a higher likelihood of developing substance abuse problems, and an impact on self-esteem and self-worth. Moreover, it can affect physical health too like a weakened immune system and cause a negative impact on sleep patterns. Loneliness can lead to social isolation, which can have an impact on cognitive health.

However, there are ways to address loneliness:

1. Prioritize Quality Connections: Focus on nurturing meaningful relationships instead of seeking validation from a large social circle. Reach out to others and build deeper connections.

2. Practice Self-Care: Engage in activities that bring joy and fulfillment, and consider joining activities with like-minded individuals. Spending quality time with yourself can help uncover the source of loneliness.

3. Seek Professional Help: If loneliness persists and affects daily life significantly, therapy or counseling can provide guidance and support.

In today’s interconnected world, feeling lonely while surrounded by people is a common experience. By valuing quality connections, engaging in meaningful activities, and seeking help when needed, solace and connection can be found even in the midst of a crowd.
