Amway’s first Manufacturing facility in India inaugurated in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, December 28, 2015: Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Selvi. J Jayalalithaa inaugurated Amway’s first Manufacturing facility in India at a function held at the secretariat in Chennai today. The Chief Minister, in the presence of senior management of the company, connected with select employees via a video conference and officially inaugurated the plant. Present on the occasion were Shri. P. Thangamani, Honorable Minister for Industries and Transport, Government of Tamil Nadu, and Mr. Anshu Budhraja, CEO, Amway India.

Amway India Enterprises Pvt. Ltd is India’s largest direct selling FMCG Company and a wholly owned subsidiary of Amway Corporation, USA. Amway’s first manufacturing facility in India is located at Nilakottai in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. This is Amway’s third manufacturing plant located outside of USA. The other plants are located in China and Vietnam. Amway has spent in India, more than 30% of the USD 335 million allocated for global expansion.

Anshu Budhraja, CEO, Amway India, said, “We had acquired 50 acres of land in Nillakottai in 2012 after signing an MOU worth Rs. 300 crores with SIPCOT, Government of Tamil Nadu. The outlay was later revised to Rs. 550 crore in the year 2015. Overall, we have invested more than Rs. 800 crores in the country. The plant will provide direct employment to more than 400 people. Post the launch, Amway India will provide direct and indirect employment to more than 3000 people in India. Currently, the company provides income-generating opportunity to over 550,000 active independent Amway Business owners (ABOs) or distributors.

The manufacturing facility can handle a turnover of Rs. 6500 crore to meet the needs of Indian consumer. Foremost, the manufacturing facility will enable us to explore launching India specific products. The investment and plant’s size only increases the company’s ability to source locally. A state-of-the-art R&D laboratory is being explored for the facility, furthering the site’s importance to the global supply chain.

All the products sold by Amway in India will now be made in India. We are planning to expand our product base and launch more than 10 new products in the country in the calendar year 2016. The high quality cookware that we are planning to launch in early 2017 will also be produced in this manufacturing plant.”

Highlights of the manufacturing facility

The plant will have one of the biggest roof-top solar plants in Tamil Nadu and the company is targeting to conserve 30-50,000 cubic meters of rain water every year. This plant would be amongst the few LEED GOLD Standard manufacturing plants in the country, and will be a Zero Discharge Waste Facility. All in all, the world class green manufacturing facility is designed to achieve energy optimization and operational efficiency.

The new facility consists of 9 production lines for Nutrition, Cosmetics and Oral Care products including 4 lines for nutrition supplements, 2 lines for Protein supplements, 2 lines for Cosmetics and 1 line for the Glister toothpaste. The plant will have the annual capacity to manufacture 1.2 Billion tablets and soft gels, 7 Million canisters of drink mixes, 19 million cosmetic jars, bottles and tubes and 60 million tooth pastes.
