Asaram Bapu Sentenced To Life Imprisonment For 2013 Rape Case

Gujarat, 31st January 2023: A court in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar has sentenced Asaram Bapu to life imprisonment for the 2013 rape case. On Monday, the court found Asaram Bapu guilty in the rape case. Today, the court announced the sentence in this case. Two sisters had filed a case of rape against Asaram Bapu in 2013.

The court found Asaram Bapu guilty under sections 376, 377, 354, 342, 357 and 506 (2). The court has sentenced him to life imprisonment under sections 376 (rape) and 377 (unnatural sex). Apart from this, one year sentence was given under section 354 (offence of rape by a spiritual teacher or teacher), section 342 (wrongful confinement), six months sentence under 357 (use of force for illegal confinement and assault), and one year sentence under 506(2) (intimidation).

The court has ordered a compensation of Rs 50,000 to the victims. Earlier, Special Public Prosecutor RC Kodekar had requested the court to impose life imprisonment and a heavy fine on Asaram Bapu.

According to special public prosecutor RC Kodekar, the victim lodged a case with the Surat police, which was transferred to the Ahmedabad police in 2013. The Chandkheda police station had registered a case under various sections of the IPC against eight people, including Asaram Bapu and his son Narayan Sai.

Asaram Bapu is currently in Jodhpur jail. At the same time, a separate case is going on against Narayan Sai in the Surat court. Two sisters had filed a complaint against Asaram Bapu and his son, alleging that they were raped between 1997 and 2006 at the Motera ashram run by the father-son duo. The younger sister had filed a complaint against Narayan Sai, and the elder sister against Asaram Bapu.
