Avoid Heatstroke: PMC Lists Safety Measures for Pune Residents
Pune, 17th March 2025: With rising summer temperatures posing a health risk, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a public advisory urging citizens to take precautions against heatstroke and dehydration. The warning comes as an increasing number of people are experiencing heat-related illnesses in the city. The Pune Municipal Corporation has also set up a special heatstroke ward at Kamala Nehru Hospital to handle heat-related emergencies.
Rising Risk of Heatstroke
The PMC has emphasized that prolonged exposure to high temperatures, strenuous outdoor activities, and inadequate hydration can lead to heatstroke, which, if untreated, can be fatal. The civic body has urged residents to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours and follow recommended safety measures to prevent heat-related ailments.
Who is Most at Risk?
Certain groups are more vulnerable to heatstroke, including:
- Infants and young children
- Athletes and outdoor workers
- Elderly individuals, especially those with heart, lung, or kidney diseases
Symptoms of Heatstroke
The PMC has listed key symptoms of heatstroke, which include:
- Nausea, vomiting, and dizziness
- Fatigue and muscle weakness
- High fever (above 40°C)
- Hot, dry skin with little or no sweating
- Rapid heartbeat and high blood pressure
- Mental confusion or unconsciousness
Preventive Measures
To reduce the risk of heatstroke, the PMC advises citizens to:
✅ Stay indoors between 12 noon and 3 PM, when the heat is at its peak.
✅ Drink plenty of fluids, including water, lemonade, buttermilk, and coconut water.
✅ Wear loose, light-colored cotton clothing and avoid black or dark-colored clothes.
✅ Use protective gear such as hats, sunglasses, umbrellas, or towels when stepping out.
✅ Keep homes cool with fans, coolers, air conditioners, and window shades.
✅ Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
✅ Monitor heat alerts on the radio, TV, or newspapers for updates.
✅ Avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and carbonated beverages, as they can cause dehydration.

Emergency Treatment for Heatstroke
If someone shows symptoms of heatstroke, the following immediate steps should be taken:
🚑 Move the patient to a cool, shaded area.
🚑 Loosen clothing and apply cool water to bring down body temperature.
🚑 Use fans, ice packs, and wet cloths to cool the patient.
🚑 Give cold water only if the patient is conscious. Avoid tea, coffee, or alcohol.
🚑 Monitor body temperature and continue cooling measures until it drops to 36.8°C.
🚑 Seek immediate medical help. In case of emergency, call 108 for an ambulance or visit the nearest municipal or private hospital.
