Bhimthadi Jatra 2024: Where Tradition Meets Sustainability and Empowerment Takes Center Stage

Pune, 20th December 2024: Bhimthadi Jatra, the eagerly awaited annual cultural and rural festival, commenced its 18th edition on December 20th, 2024, at the expansive College of Agricultural Ground, Pune. The inaugural ceremony, held at 4:30 pm, marked the beginning of a six-day celebration embracing cultural heritage, sustainability, and community empowerment.
The event was inaugurated by the ladies and Saree Stylist Ashwini Narayan, and it was led by the esteemed Mrs. Sunanda Tai Pawar. In her keynote address, Mrs. Pawar shared, “Bhimthadi Jatra, since its inception in 2006, has become a remarkable platform celebrating the rich heritage, culture, and entrepreneurial spirit of rural India. In its 18th edition, the Jatra continues its mission to empower women, farmers, and artisans by connecting them with urban audiences. From handcrafted artifacts and traditional foods to organic and sustainable products, Bhimthadi blends rural talent and innovation.”
“This year, we also commemorate the upcoming 25th death anniversary of Appasaheb Pawar, whose visionary work laid the foundation for sustainable rural development. We proudly highlight Geographical Indication (GI) products, preserving and promoting regional specialties. The ‘ShareYour Privilege’ campaign aims for visitors to support rural communities through meaningful engagement. With over 1 lakh visitors expected, Bhimthadi Jatra is not just an event—it’s a movement that bridges the rural-urban divide, fosters deeper connections to our roots, and celebrates the vibrant spirit of Maharashtra.”
A special highlight of the opening day was a captivating session featuring Ashwini Narayan for a Saree Draping Workshop on the iconic Indian saree, in line with the International Saree Day which is celebrated on 21st December.
Bhimthadi Jatra continues its legacy of supporting women-led self-help groups, providing them with a platform to showcase and sell handmade products. This initiative creates a unique shopping experience while uplifting local artisans and craftswomen.
As a heartfelt tribute, Bhimthadi Jatra 2024 features the Appasaheb Pawar Memorial, showcasing a timeline of his remarkable life and contributions. His enduring legacy inspires sustainable practices and community-driven initiatives celebrated throughout the event.
Reaffirming its commitment to social responsibility, Bhimthadi Jatra launched the #ShareYourPrivilege Campaign, encouraging visitors to support rural artisans and create meaningful cultural exchanges. This initiative fosters a deeper connection between urban and rural communities, promoting shared prosperity and understanding.
Demonstrating its environmental commitment, Bhimthadi Jatra 2024 has been declared a no-plastic zone. The event promotes eco-friendly practices by encouraging sustainable living, featuring reusable products, and spotlighting sustainable brands and fabrics.
Bhimthadi Jatra is designed to be inclusive and family-friendly. The event is pet-friendly and features dedicated nursing areas to ensure comfort and convenience for mothers and their infants. Additionally, to facilitate the journey to Bhimthadi Jatra, the main gate of the College of Agriculture Pune on Savitribai Phule Pune University Road will remain open on Saturday, Sunday, and December 25th.
