Patiala, April 1st, 2024: On a young girl’s birthday, tragedy struck when 10-year-old Manvi passed away after consuming a cake ordered online. The Patiala Police, responding to the complaint, initiated an investigation but couldn’t locate the shop linked to the cake delivery. Consequently, the family took matters into their own hands.

In a case surrounding Manvi’s death due to a cake ordered via Zomato, Patiala Police have filed charges against four individuals, including the New India Bakery owner, with three arrests made. Among those apprehended are bakery manager Ranjit, employee Pawan, and Vijay.

The elusive bakery owner Gurmeet Singh remains at large. Allegedly, Singh had registered another entity named Cake Kanha, operating on paper, which was affiliated with Zomato and other online food delivery platforms. This firm served as a front, with all orders being fulfilled by New India Bakery.

Kajal, Manvi’s mother residing in Aman Nagar, had ordered a cake from Cake Kanha via Zomato for her daughter’s birthday on March 24. However, the cake was delivered from New India Bakery. Investigations revealed that the bakery maintained a stock of four to ten cakes, delivering promptly upon online orders. Seven days post-incident, health department teams collected samples from the bakery and three other sites.

Manvi’s health deteriorated after consuming cake in excess, leading to her demise the following day, despite the entire family partaking in the dessert. Despite lodging a complaint against Cake Kanha, the police failed to locate the purported shop.

Subsequently, on March 30, Manvi’s relatives re-ordered from Cake Kanha via Zomato. Upon delivery, the police intervened, discovering the cake originated from New India Bakery. Investigations uncovered Singh’s involvement in registering Cake Kanha and its integration with various online platforms.

ASP City Mohammad Sarfaraz Alam confirmed charges against the accused under section 304 (Murder Without Intent), discarding the initial section 304-A. In response to the tragedy, Zomato delisted Cake Kanha, with notices of permanent closure issued for several other establishments on the app. New India Bakery ceased operations following sampling on Sunday afternoon.
