Pune, February 17,  2021: A new garbage processing plant of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is all set to come up in the limits of Pune Cantonment area.  The PMC will be paying Rs 7.39 crores to Pune Cantonment Board (PCB)  for providing the land.

The decision to construct a new processing plant was taken during the Standing Committee meeting held on Tuesday. The issue of construction of the processing plant has become serious after Uruli Devachi plant was closed down.

Although PMC has constructed smaller processing plants in various parts of the city, still the processing of 2,000 metric tonnes generated in the city daily remains a big challenge. Thus, PMC had requested permission for processing the garbage at Cantonment’s 50-tonne capacity garbage plant at Hadapsar Industrial Estate.

However, for dumping PMC will have to pay Rs 402 per tonne per day with 10 percent hike every year, said PMC Standing Committee president Hemant Rasane. He added that if PMC wants to process 100 tonnes of the garbage, then it will have to spend on the machinery and other logistics.

A joint committee will be set-up with PMC and PCB officials who will monitor the work.
