Pune, 11th May 2026: The Central Government has approved projects worth ₹1,290 crore for Pune under the Government of India’s Urban Challenge Fund. The approval was granted during the first Apex Committee meeting chaired by the Secretary of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
During the Apex Committee meeting, PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram presented the projects. The administration also credited Additional Commissioner Pavneet Kaur for her consistent support in securing the approvals.
The approved projects include an ₹890 crore water supply scheme for 12 villages affected under the GBS area and ₹400 crore worth of flood-control and stormwater drainage works across Pune city.
According to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), around 85 per cent work of the equal water supply scheme in the old city limits has already been completed, and the entire project is expected to become operational by August 2026. Water supply works are currently underway in seven villages, while a detailed project report has been prepared for 25 villages.
The proposed water supply project for the 12 villages — Khadakwasla, Nanded, Nandoshi, Sunsanagar, Kirkitwadi, Dhayari, Narhe, Jambhulwadi, Kolhewadi, Mangadewadi, Nimbalkarwadi and Bhilarwadi — includes the construction of a 200 MLD water treatment plant, a 71-kilometre transmission main line and a 390-kilometre distribution network.

PMC stated that the project will also include a SCADA and AMR-based smart metering system, with the objective of providing purified water supply to nearly 7.78 lakh citizens till 2052.
Apart from the water supply scheme, flood mitigation and stormwater drainage measures will be implemented at 335 flood-prone locations across Pune city. The civic administration said these works are expected to help protect citizens and property while improving public health and urban infrastructure resilience during the monsoon season.
The administration stated that Pune Municipal Corporation is working towards saturation of civic amenities in the city under the guidance of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. It was claimed that the Chief Minister has been giving special attention to Pune’s overall infrastructure development, helping accelerate major civic projects in the city.
