Commemorative postage stamp on St. Teresa released in Mumbai
Mumbai | September 4, 2016 : IndiaPost today issued a commemorative postage stamp on Mother Teresa, on the occasion of her canonization as St. Teresa by Pope Francis in the Vatican City. Union Minister of State (I/c) for Communications Manoj Sinha unveiled the postage stamp in Mumbai in the presence of Bishop Agnelo Gracias, Sister Rubella, representing Missionaries of Charity and several other dignitaries present for the function at the Divine Child High School, Andheri, Mumbai.
Mother Teresa devoted her whole life serving the poor and destitute people in India. Mother Teresa’s work has been recognised and acclaimed throughout the world and she received numerous awards and distinctions, prominent among which were Padma Shree in 1962, the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971), the Nobel Peace Prize for humanitarian work in 1979 and the Bharat Ratna in 1980.
President Pranab Mukherjee, in his message issued from the Rashtrapati Bhavan described Mother Teresa as an embodiment of compassion. “Mother Teresa provided dignity and respect to those who had been defeated by life. She was a messiah of the poor and a pillar of support for the weak and suffering. Her simple manners touched the hearts of millions of people of all faiths. Every citizen of India will take pride in the recognition being accorded to Mother Teresa for her service to humanity and God through this Canonization. Let the example of Mother Teresa inspire all of us to dedicate ourselves to the welfare of mankind ” the President said in his message.
Mother Teresa established the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 with the mission of caring for the poor and the destitute. Today, the branches of Missionaries of Charity in several countries continue their service to humanity, reaching out to the needy, regardless of their religion or social status.
