Mumbai/Pune, 3rd July 2025: In response to the growing traffic congestion in Pune, a comprehensive traffic management plan for the city was prepared in 2024, and several initiatives under this plan are currently being implemented. This information was shared by Maharashtra Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal during monsoon session in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

The issue was raised through a calling attention notice by MLAs Sunil Kamble, Bhimrao Tapkir, Rahul Kul, Bapusaheb Pathare, and Vijay Shivtare.

Minister Misal stated that the number of vehicles in Pune has seen a significant rise, with around 40,42,659 vehicles currently on the roads, according to a report by the Regional Transport Office (RTO). To manage this growing volume, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Pune Traffic Police are working in coordination.

To streamline traffic in the Pune Cantonment area, measures such as designating no-parking and no-halting zones, upgrading signal systems, and deploying smart signals and CCTV cameras under the Smart City project are being implemented.

Taking into account the projected urban growth till 2054, the traffic plan includes proposals for ring roads, bypasses, flyovers, and metro rail projects to offer alternative transport options. Additionally, steps like creation of traffic islands, construction of road dividers, appointment of traffic wardens, installation of direction boards, lane markings, zebra crossings, and relocation of bus stops obstructing traffic are also being undertaken.

Regular review meetings are being held between the traffic department and various departments of the municipal corporation at both central and zonal levels to ensure efficient implementation.

To enhance coordination among public transport systems, feedback and suggestions will be invited as part of the traffic plan. Minister Misal also assured that consultations will be held with local representatives to implement necessary solutions.
