Pune, May 28, 2020: Janata Vasahat, a slum spread on 100 acres area near Parvati hill, had largely stayed away from the Covid-19 pandemic due to self-discipline and a canal that kept the slum population segregated.  However, in just 2 weeks, 51 cases of COVID-19 and four deaths have been reported from the area.

One of the residents from the area tested COVID positive on May 14, the authorities forgot to quarantine his family and neighbors this ignorance and late response f rom the civic body has led people to lose their lives.  On Tuesday about 29 people were put under quarantine in a school that is run by Pune municipal corporation (PMC). Although tracing of people has been started, prompting the civic authorities to seal the entire area.

Now the area runs the risk of getting more people infected due to the reckless behaviour of civic bodies and their callous response. In a place like Janata Vasahat, where people share proximity it’s difficult to trace people. The officials say it takes time to trace people. We quarantined people as we got to know. PMC staff and Dattawadi police helped in the efforts to control the situation at Janata Vasahat.
