Pune, 29th June 2023: The Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar metro line has been experiencing significant delays as construction work came to a standstill for over two weeks. The main reason for this halt was the traffic police’s refusal to grant permission for barricading unless the width of the barricades is reduced. However, after negotiations between the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and the traffic police, a breakthrough seems to have been reached, paving the way for the resumption of work within a week.

The issue arose from the need for barricading at Krishi Vidyalaya Chowk to facilitate metro construction. Coincidentally, Pune hosted two meetings of the G-20 working group this month, along with the ongoing Palkhi ceremony in the city. These events resulted in restrictions on barricading for the metro project, causing a delay in the construction work on Ganesh Khind Road, where permission for barricading had not yet been obtained from the traffic police.

In an effort to resolve the impasse, a meeting was held between the PMRDA and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic Branch, Vijay Kumar Magar. During the meeting, PMRDA expressed its willingness to reduce the width of the barricades, thereby addressing the concerns raised by the traffic police. Consequently, the barricades near the completed metro poles will be downsized from 11 meters to 6 to 7 meters, allowing the road to be opened as much as possible. Encouragingly, Deputy Commissioner Magar has indicated his readiness to grant permission for barricading within a week.

The Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar metro line spans a distance of 23 kilometers and includes the construction of a double-decker flyover between Savitribai Phule Pune Vidyapeeth Chowk and E-Square along the same route. This flyover, extending over 1.7 kilometers, will be an integral part of the metro project. Unfortunately, due to the prolonged halt caused by the lack of barricading, concerns have been raised regarding a potential extension of the completion period for the entire project.
