New Delhi, 2nd March 2025: Delhiites will soon be able to experience cruise rides on the Yamuna River, as the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) has issued tenders for the project. The government aims to launch the service in the early months of the new financial year, starting April 1.

A Long-Pending Project Revived

The idea of operating cruises in Delhi was first proposed by former Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in 2014-15, but it stalled following the change in Delhi’s government. However, with the BJP government now in power in the capital, the project is being revived.

On February 28, the DTTDC issued tenders for the initiative, and officials have assured that the process will be completed soon. A senior Delhi government official stated that if the project proves successful, more cruise rides will be introduced in the future.

Cruise Operations and Regulations

Initially, the selected operator will be granted a five-year contract, with the possibility of a five-year extension based on performance. The ticket prices will be set by the operating company, but the government will regulate fares to ensure affordability. The availability of cruise rides will depend on the water levels in the Yamuna.

Experts note that for several months a year, the stretch between Jagatpur and Wazirabad maintains sufficient water levels to support small cruise operations.

Cruise Features and Safety Measures

Two fully air-conditioned cruise boats, each with a seating capacity of 20-30 passengers, will operate on a six-kilometer route from Jagatpur to Wazirabad Barrage.

These eco-friendly cruises will run on electric or solar-hybrid technology to minimize pollution.

The boats, not older than two years, will include:

Zero-discharge bio-toilets

Audio-video facilities and an announcement system

Onboard safety gear and passenger security checks

Operators will be responsible for all operational costs, including maintenance, weather monitoring, and communication with authorities.

Strict environmental regulations will be enforced, ensuring no waste disposal into the Yamuna.

A New Tourism Attraction for Delhi

The clean and odor-free stretch of the Yamuna along this route makes it ideal for river-based tourism. Passengers will also be able to host small events onboard, making it a unique leisure and tourism experience for Delhi residents and visitors alike.

With this initiative, Delhi takes a significant step toward revitalizing the Yamuna and promoting sustainable tourism in the capital.
