This marks the first time American soldiers have been killed in this region since last year’s October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. President Joe Biden has pledged to hold those responsible for the attack accountable. The drone strike by an Iran-backed group in Jordan left three American soldiers dead and several others wounded, prompting a stern response from President Biden.
A large drone targeted the ‘Logistics Support’ base known as ‘Tower 22′ in Jordan. According to central command, approximately 350 American military personnel and Air Force personnel were stationed at this base. Several American officials, on condition of anonymity, revealed that three soldiers were killed, and most of the injured were from the army.
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated, “America will take all necessary actions to defend its soldiers and American interests.” Austin mentioned that troops were deployed there to permanently defeat the terrorist organization ISIS.
The drone struck near the soldiers’ sleeping quarters, resulting in a higher casualty count. Tower 22, located just 20 kilometres from the Al-Tanf garrison in Syria, serves as a vital logistics hub for American forces in the region. It is strategically positioned near the Al-Tanf garrison, where a small number of American soldiers are stationed.
Al-Tanf was crucial in the fight against the Islamic State and played a role in the American strategy to counter Iranian military construction in eastern Syria. Its proximity to American troops could potentially provide support while also allowing them to monitor remnants of the Islamic State in the region.
Jordan’s army is among the largest recipients of Washington’s foreign military financing. The country hosts hundreds of American trainers and is one of the regional partners engaged in extensive year-round exercises with US troops.
This attack comes amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East, where fighting erupted in Gaza after Hamas launched attacks on Israel last year, resulting in 1,200 casualties. According to the local health ministry, over 26,000 Palestinians have been killed in subsequent Israeli strikes on Gaza.
