Electricity Outage Affects Over 3.55 Lakhs Consumers In Pune And Pimpri Chinchwad Areas
Pune, 18th May 2023: A major technical failure occurred in two out of four ultra-high voltage 400 KV power lines belonging to Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), causing a widespread power outage in Pune city and district.
The incident took place at 7.10 pm on Thursday, affecting approximately 3.55 lakh electricity consumers, including those in Chakan MIDC, Nagar Road Division of Pune City, and Pimpri and Bhosari Divisions of Pimpri Chinchwad City. Authorities anticipate restoring power to the affected consumers in a phased manner after 10.30 pm.
The cause of the disruption can be attributed to a sudden technical failure in two channels of PGCIL’s Shikrapur to Talegaon ultra-high voltage 400 KV power lines. Consequently, the power supply to various ultra-high pressure substations, including the 400 KV Chakan, 220 KV Chinchwad, 220 KV Urse, 220 KV Chakan, and 132 KV Chakan, was disrupted.
With the shutdown affecting an electricity supply of approximately 396 megawatts, around 1.25 lakh consumers in Pune city, primarily in Kharadi, Vadgaon Sheri, Vimannagar, Yerwada, and Dhanori areas, experienced power outages.
Areas such as Pimpri, Chinchwad, Punawale, Walhekarwadi, Wakad, Tathwade, Kivale, Ravet, Thergaon, and 50 percent of Akurdi, including 2,30,000 customers, faced interruptions in power supply. Additionally, approximately 5,000 industrial customers relying on high and low voltage in Chakan MIDC were also affected.
However, Chakan city continued to receive power through an alternate power line connected to the 132 KV ultra-high voltage substation.
The responsibility for the maintenance and repair of the 400 KV power lines lies with the Adani company. They are working to rectify the fault and restore power supply. It is expected that power will be reinstated to all the affected ultra-high pressure substations around 10.30 pm.
A phased restoration of power supply will commence to the sub-centres of MSEDCL. As a result, interrupted power supply in all the affected areas is projected to be reinstated between 10.30 pm and 11.30 pm.
The power outage caused inconvenience and disruption to residents, businesses, and industrial units throughout the affected regions. Local authorities are coordinating with the Adani company to ensure a swift resolution of the technical issue. They have urged consumers to remain patient as efforts are being made to restore power as quickly as possible.
