Pune, 13th September 2023: As devotees from various parts of the state and beyond converge on Pune to celebrate the renowned Ganeshotsav festival, the city has amplified its security infrastructure with the installation of a staggering 1800 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras. These vigilant eyes will be closely monitoring the festive crowds throughout the duration of the event.

In a bid to enhance safety and curb potential incidents such as jewelry thefts and mobile phone pilferages during the festival, the Pune Police, under the guidance of Commissioner of Police Retesh Kumaarr and Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Karnik, have devised comprehensive security arrangements. The aim is to ensure that the festival proceeds without any untoward occurrences.

Stringent security protocols are set to be in place, with a substantial deployment of law enforcement personnel from local police stations, crime branch teams, and the dedicated Damini squad formed to safeguard women during the festivities. Additionally, plainclothes police teams will patrol different areas of the city, providing a discreet but vigilant presence.

The city’s surveillance network comprises a combination of cameras, including 1300 installed by the Pune Police and 500 added under the Smart City Scheme by the Municipal Corporation. Furthermore, more than two and a half thousand registered public Ganeshotsav mandals have been urged by the police to install CCTV cameras within the mandap areas. This proactive approach to security prioritizes the well-being of devotees and aims to deter potential criminal activities.

The CCTV coverage will extend to key locations throughout the city, particularly in areas known for hosting large crowds of devotees, such as Shivaji Road, Bajirao Road, Tilak Road, Kumthekar Road, Kelkar Road, Laxmi Road, Ferguson Road, Jungli Maharaj Road, and the Deccan Gymkhana area. Police personnel stationed at various points will provide real-time guidance and ensure crowd control through the CCTV network.

Local shopkeepers and businesses in interior areas like Sadashiv Peth, Narayan Peth, and Shukrawar Peth have also actively participated in this security initiative by installing CCTV cameras. All the cameras are integrated into a centralized monitoring system located at the Police Commissionerate and Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Commissioner of Police Retesh Kumaarr emphasized the paramount importance of ensuring the safety of devotees during Ganeshotsav, encouraging public bodies, local traders, and professionals to join the effort by installing CCTV cameras.
