Pimpri, July 29, 2020: A judicial magistrate court granted bail to a 19-year-old girl who was arrested by Pimpri Chinchwad police after her father had lodged a jewellery theft case following her marriage with a man from another religion.

As per the FIR registered with Chinchwad police station, Bhagyashri Parihar wanted to marry her classmate Aamir Shaikh. Her family didn’t approve of her wedding so she eloped and got married on July 20. Her father Ganesh Parihar filed her missing complaint at Chinchwad police station. On July 24, both of them surrendered themselves at the police station. The cops called her parents, and she then informed them about their marriage.

On July 26, her father lodged a theft case against Bhagyashri alleging that she had stolen ornaments worth Rs 3.95 lakh. Her mother said that she had seen Bhagyashri wearing the same ornaments at the police station on July 24.

Police registered an FIR for an offence under section 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Bhagyashri was arrested and produced before a court which remanded her to judicial custody, and sent her to Yerwada Central Jail. She had to spend a day in jail as the cops had failed to produce documents demanded by the court.

Her lawyer applied for bail. She deposed before the court on Tuesday via video conferencing. She said that her father has lodged a false complaint after she converted to Islam for marriage. Police opposed her bail plea on the ground that they are yet to recover the ornaments from her. However, the court released her on bail.

Bhagyashri’s lawyer advocate Shrikrishan Ghuge said that she is above 18 years, and can marry a person of her choice. The case was lodged by her family after six days as an afterthought to harass her.
