Pune, 8th April 2024: ADGP Amitabh Gupta, head of Maharashtra Prisons and Correctional Services department, revealed in an exclusive interview with Punekar News that for the first time in India, they are introducing full-body scanners in four jails across Maharashtra. These scanners are not available in airports or any other places. It is the first time they will be installed in Maharashtra’s largest capacity jails, including Yerwada Central Jail in Pune. This measure aims to completely eliminate smuggling within the jails.

Gupta emphasized that they are actively addressing any staff involvement in smuggling within the jails. Previous actions have been taken against both prisoners and staff found involved in such activities. Although they have significantly reduced smuggling incidents, the implementation of body scanners will ensure that smuggling becomes impossible within the jails moving forward.

There are over 42,000 prisoners lodged in jails across Maharashtra.
