Pune, 16th October 2026: A large number of dead fish were found in the Indrayani river at Alandi on Wednesday, raising fresh concerns over river pollution and its impact on aquatic life. Repeated incidents of fish deaths have triggered anger among devotees, Warkaris and local residents, who say that authorities have failed to take permanent measures to control pollution.

Dead fish were found near Siddhabet weir, Garudstambh and Bhakta Pundalik temple ghat on October 14. The dead fish floating on the water and the foul smell in the area highlighted the worsening condition of the river. Similar incidents were reported in September and early October.

The discharge of sewage and chemical-laden wastewater into the river is suspected to be among the possible causes of the fish deaths. Pollution can reduce the level of dissolved oxygen in water, making it difficult for fish to survive. However, the exact cause of the latest incident is yet to be established and will require water testing and an official investigation.

Nisar Sayyed of Avirat Foundation, Alandi, claimed that native fish species in the river had disappeared due to pollution. He also expressed concern that chemical contamination could affect aquatic life and pose risks to human health, including an increased risk of cancer. He said the foundation would release detailed information on the issue soon.

Devotees and Warkaris have demanded that the authorities stop the discharge of untreated sewage into the river, test water samples and identify the sources of pollution. They have also called for strict action against those responsible.

Residents and devotees said that removing dead fish would not solve the problem and urged the authorities to implement permanent measures to prevent further pollution and protect the river’s aquatic life.
