Friendship Turns Fatal: Pune Man Injured After Friend’s Gun Accidentally Fires

Kondhwa, 20th January 2025: A 31-year-old man was injured after his friend accidentally fired a bullet from an illegally possessed pistol on the Kondhwa-Gangadham Road late Saturday night. Attempting to avoid trouble, the injured man initially misled the police, but an investigation unraveled the truth, leading to the arrest of the accused.
The arrested individual, identified as Anil Chavan, was found in possession of an unlicensed country-made pistol. The injured, Pradeep Sawant, and Chavan are reportedly friends who work together in land purchase and sale transactions.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 10:45 PM on Saturday when the duo was drinking in an open space along the Gangadham-Kondhwa road. During the gathering, Chavan showed Sawant the pistol he had brought illegally. While handling the weapon, a bullet was accidentally discharged, striking Sawant below the elbow.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, Chavan and Sawant decided to hide the incident. Chavan dropped Sawant near the Swami Narayan Temple area in Narhe and left. Sawant then visited a private hospital in Dattanagar, where doctors grew suspicious of his injury and recommended he seek treatment at a larger medical facility. Eventually, Sawant arrived at a hospital in Narhe.
Sensing foul play, the hospital authorities alerted the Ambegaon police, who visited Sawant. Initially, Sawant claimed he had been shot by an unknown individual near the Swami Narayan Temple.
However, the police investigation revealed discrepancies in his account. A team examined CCTV footage and spoke to local residents near the temple, who reported no gunshot sounds in the area. Confronted with the evidence, Sawant confessed to the truth, stating that the bullet was fired accidentally by Chavan.
Following the confession, the Kondhwa police registered a case against Chavan for illegal possession of a firearm and arrested him. Senior Police Inspector Vinay Patankar is leading the investigation into the matter.
