Ganeshotsav to Become a Platform for MahaSimhastha Awareness; NTKMA Proposes ‘Ganesh Mandal Challenge’
Nashik, 12th August 2026: With preparations for the MahaSimhastha Kumbh Mela 2027 gathering momentum, the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority (NTKMA) has proposed leveraging the widespread community network of Ganesh Mandals to build awareness and participation around the upcoming Kumbh.
The proposed ‘MahaSimhastha Ganesh Mandal Challenge’ was discussed with representatives of major Ganesh Mandals from Nashik city and district at a meeting held at the District Collector’s Office on Tuesday. The meeting was chaired by NTKMA Commissioner Shekhar Singh.
NTKMA Additional Commissioner Kamlakar Randive and Tehsildar Yogesh Chandre were present at the meeting. Representatives of major Ganesh Mandals from across the city and district participated in the discussions, including Samir Shete, President of Nashik Ganesh Mandals Association.
The proposed initiative seeks to use Ganeshotsav as a large-scale citizen engagement platform for MahaSimhastha, with Ganesh Mandals encouraged to create Kumbh-themed decorations, installations, awareness activities and community initiatives during the festival.
Seven themes for creative participation
Under the proposed challenge, Mandals can develop their concepts around seven broad themes — the spiritual significance of Kumbh and Amrit, Nashik-Trimbakeshwar’s heritage, a future-ready MahaSimhastha, a green and sustainable Kumbh, an inclusive Kumbh, service and dedication, and Nashik as the spiritual capital.
The initiative is aimed at taking the message of MahaSimhastha beyond the traditional Kumbh venues and into neighbourhoods across Nashik. Ganesh Mandals can play the role of community ambassadors by engaging citizens, particularly youth and local communities, through creative displays, awareness programmes and social initiatives.
Focus on ideas, participation and sustainability
The proposed evaluation framework gives importance not merely to the scale or expenditure on decorations, but to relevance to the MahaSimhastha theme, originality and creativity, quality of execution, public engagement and impact, and sustainability and replicability.
The initiative has been designed to provide opportunities to Mandals of different sizes, with greater emphasis on ideas, community participation and sustainable execution rather than expensive installations.
Five award categories proposed
The proposed challenge includes five main award categories — Best Kumbh-Themed Ganapati Decoration, Best Spiritual Interpretation, Best Sustainable Mandal, Best Technology and Innovation Installation, and Best Community Participation Initiative.
Each of the five main categories will carry a proposed prize of ₹2 lakh, while a Jury’s Special Recognition for Originality carrying a proposed prize of ₹5 lakh has also been envisaged.
Registration for the proposed ‘MahaSimhastha Ganesh Mandal Challenge’ will remain open until September 10, 2026.
Mandal representatives share suggestions
During the meeting, representatives of Ganesh Mandals discussed the proposed initiative and shared their views and suggestions regarding participation, implementation and outreach. The suggestions received during the consultation will help shape the final framework of the initiative.
The proposed implementation mechanism includes registration of participating Mandals, outreach through Ganesh Mandal federations and local organisations, orientation meetings, provision of creative and knowledge resources related to MahaSimhastha, and documentation and evaluation of entries.
The initiative seeks to build public awareness and ownership around MahaSimhastha well ahead of the main Kumbh period, while bringing together tradition, creativity, sustainability, technology and community participation.
