GBS Cases Rise to 130 in Pune District, Health Authorities on High Alert

Pune, 30th January 2025: The Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme has reported a total of 130 suspected cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in the Pune District, with 73 confirmed diagnoses and two suspected deaths as of today. Health officials are urging citizens to remain vigilant but not to panic, as preventive measures are being implemented. However, authorities have confirmed that no new cases were reported today, and the three newly added cases are from previous days.

Of the reported cases, 25 patients are from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) area, 74 from newly added villages in the PMC area, 13 from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), 9 from Pune Rural, and 9 from other districts. Currently, 20 patients are on ventilator support.

The age group most affected is 20-29 years, with 30 cases reported. The health department has intensified surveillance activities, with 58,245 houses surveyed across Pune District.

Authorities have collected 154 water samples for analysis, with 8 sources found contaminated. Citizens are advised to drink boiled water, consume fresh and clean food, and avoid stale or partially cooked meat.

Common symptoms of GBS include sudden weakness or paralysis in hands or legs, difficulty walking, and prolonged diarrhoea. The Maharashtra Government’s Public Health Department assures that they are prepared to implement necessary preventive and control measures.

A state-level rapid response team has visited the affected areas, and local authorities have been instructed to increase health promotion activities. Private medical practitioners are urged to notify public health authorities of any GBS cases.

Citizens experiencing symptoms are advised to visit government hospitals promptly. The health department emphasizes that while the situation is being closely monitored, there is no cause for panic.
