Germany Opens New Opportunities for Pune SMEs Under Proposed 12-Month Programme

Pune, 1st September 2026: Pune’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) could get opportunities to expand into Germany and other European markets, while German technology and expertise may be explored for addressing challenges related to waste management, urban transport and city planning in Pune.
The development follows a meeting between Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials and a delegation from the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region of Germany. Representatives from the German cities of Raunheim, Mörfelden-Walldorf and Kelsterbach visited the PMC and held discussions on potential areas of cooperation.
During the meeting, a proposal was discussed to launch a 12-month programme for selected Pune-based SMEs to help them expand their businesses in Germany and gain access to European markets.
The proposed programme would include market research, developing market-entry strategies for Germany and Europe, connecting businesses with potential customers and commercial partners, exploring technology partnerships and providing guidance on business expansion in Germany.
German expertise to be explored for waste management
The proposed cooperation is also aimed at addressing civic challenges in Pune through knowledge and technology exchange.
Discussions covered the possibility of using German experience and technology in areas including waste segregation, recycling, waste-to-energy, biogas production and sustainable waste processing.
With Pune continuing to expand, the two sides also discussed potential cooperation in urban transport, infrastructure and city planning. The possibility of sharing knowledge, technology and best practices between cities in the two countries was explored.
Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure emphasised the need for long-term cooperation between Pune and Germany. She said partnerships could be strengthened in areas including technology, urban development, waste management, transportation and cultural exchange.
PMC Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said Pune has a strong ecosystem in education, information technology, startups, manufacturing and skilled human resources.
He said this could create opportunities for cooperation with German cities in areas such as artificial intelligence, urban governance, transportation, waste management and urban planning.
David Rendel, Mayor of Raunheim in Germany, said there was significant potential for cooperation between Pune and the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region in technology, innovation and economic development.
He also stressed the importance of strengthening ties between companies, institutions and citizens in the two regions.
Four priority areas identified
The discussions identified four broad priority areas for Pune-Germany cooperation:
SME development and access to European markets
Waste management and the circular economy
Urban planning and infrastructure
Urban transport and mobility
The next phase will focus on developing the framework for joint initiatives and establishing a coordination mechanism between the participating stakeholders.
