Girl assaulted for ‘Wearing Short Dress, Roaming With Men’

Pune, May 9 : In a shocking incident, a 22-year-old woman was allegedly brutally assaulted in Lullanagar, Kondhwa, for opposing eve-teasing on May 1. Later the brother in law of one of the accused told the woman in a police chowky it happened for wearing ‘short-dress’ and ‘moving around with men at odd hours’ which is ‘not the culture of Pune’.

Police have arrested three accused while two others are still at large.

The incident took place around 5.30 am on May 1 when the woman alongwith her male friends was returning from the Sangeet ceremony of a friend.

As per her statement, she was travelling a car when the accused passed objectionable comments to which her friends asked them not to do so. The accused began abusing them. Later they followed the woman till her building and began assaulting her and her friends. The woman called the police.

However the woman lodged the complaint, police registered a non-cognisable (NC) offence, wherein accused was not arrested.

Later she approached senior officers who registered an FIR against the accused on Sunday for offences under sections 143, 147, 149,354, 323 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The arrested accused has been identified as Amit Ashok Mukhedkar (35), Shubham Shashi Gupta (19) of Market Yard, and Yogesh Chaugule (26) of Araneshwar area. They were released on bail by a court on Monday.

Police Inspector (crime) Varsharani Patil is further investigating the case.
