Good News : Pune Dam Storage Surpasses Last Year’s Level, Easing Water Supply Concerns
Pune, 24th July 2026: Water storage in the four key reservoirs supplying Pune has surpassed last year’s level for the first time this monsoon, bringing much-needed relief to the city after a delayed start to the rainy season.
According to the Khadakwasla irrigation department, the combined storage in the Khadakwasla dam cluster — comprising Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar — stood at 23.60 TMC (80.98%) at 6 pm on Friday, compared to 23.42 TMC (80.35%) recorded last year. The steady inflows over the past few days have significantly improved the water position across the reservoir system.
Among the four dams, Khadakwasla reached full capacity with 1.97 TMC (100%), while Panshet held 9.04 TMC (84.87%), Varasgaon had 10.06 TMC (78.75%), and Temghar stored 2.35 TMC (63.44%) at 6 pm on Friday.
The dam catchment continued to receive moderate to heavy rainfall over the past 12 hours, with Temghar recording the highest rainfall at 55 mm, followed by Panshet (45 mm), Varasgaon (43 mm) and Khadakwasla (12 mm).
Officials said the four reservoirs received a combined inflow of 824 mcft during the day. Khadakwasla dam continued releasing water through its spillway, with the cumulative discharge reaching 1.82 TMC so far this season.
The improved storage is expected to ease concerns over Pune’s water availability and provide a comfortable buffer for the city’s drinking water needs in the coming months.
