Governor of Maharashtra Faces Criticism For His Statement On Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

Pune/Aurangabad, 28th February 2022: Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshyari has been embroiled in a big controversy over his remarks on Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and saint-philosopher-poet Samarth Ramdas.

Samarth Ramdas was Shivaji Maharaj’s guru, according to Koshyari, who also mentioned how essential a guru is in Indian society.

While speaking at a session in Aurangabad on Sunday, Koshyari discussed how gurus influenced the lives of Chandragupta Maurya and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In fact, Chanakya or Kautilya had a significant influence on Chandragupta Maurya, who founded the Maurya Empire and built one of the largest empires on the Indian subcontinent in ancient times. On this land, many rajas, maharajas, and chakravartis were born. But who would have inquired about Chandragupta if Chanakya had not been present? Without Samarth (Ramdas), who would have inquired about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj? I have no doubts about Chandragupta and Shivaji Maharaj’s abilities. The function of a guru is similar to that of a mother who shapes her child.

Satara’s Chhatrapati UdayanRaje Bhosale, a direct descendant of Shivaji Maharaj and a member of the BJP Rajya Sabha, blasted the Governor’s statement. “Rajmata Jijau was Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s true mentor. Ramdas was never his guru”, he claimed. Udayan Raje asked the Governor to retract his remarks.

When asked for his thoughts, Chandrakant Patil, the state BJP president, answered, “No comments.”

Sanjay Raut, a Rajya Sabha member and chief spokesperson for the Shiv Sena, has asked the BJP to clarify the situation. “The Governor’s speech has caused discontent in Maharashtra. I believe the BJP should make a statement on this matter right away,” he remarked.

Supriya Sule, daughter of NCP President Sharad Pawar and Baramati MP, stated there is no historical evidence that the Shivaji Maharaj and Samarth Ramdas had a guru-shishya relationship.

“The Narendra Modi administration and its envoy (Governor Koshyari) are demeaning Maharashtra and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It will never be tolerated,” Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole stated.

NCP workers staged a protest against Koshiyari in different parts of the state.
