GPT-4o Wouldn’t Have Happened Without Prafulla Dhariwal: OpenAI’s Sam Altman Praises Pune Boy

Pune (India), 19 May 2024: In 2016, Prafulla Dhariwal was a research intern at OpenAI. Today, he is being recognized globally for his pivotal role in developing the groundbreaking AI model, GPT-4o.

Earlier this week, OpenAI introduced its latest flagship AI model, GPT-4o, which integrates capabilities across voice, text, and vision. Dhariwal led the team behind this innovation.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly acknowledged Dhariwal’s contributions for the first time. “GPT-4o would not have happened without the vision, talent, conviction, and determination of Prafulla Dhariwal over a long period of time. That, along with the work of many others, led to what I hope will turn out to be a revolution in how we use computers,” Altman wrote on X.

Prafulla Dhariwal, a native of Pune, displayed extraordinary talent from an early age. In 2009, he won the National Talent Search Scholarship and secured a gold medal at the International Astronomy Olympiad in China. 

In the subsequent years, Dhariwal continued to excel. He earned gold medals at both the International Mathematical Olympiad and the International Physics Olympiad in 2012 and 2013. During his Class XII exams, he scored an impressive 295 out of 300 in Science.

Dhariwal’s academic prowess extended to competitive exams as well. He scored 190 in Maharashtra’s Common Entrance Test and 330 out of 360 in the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE-Mains). In 2013, he was awarded the Abasaheb Naravane Memorial Prize.

While preparing for his IIT entrance exams, Dhariwal was accepted into MIT, where he pursued computer science and mathematics, graduating in 2017 with a perfect 5.0 GPA.

In 2016, Dhariwal joined OpenAI as a research intern and quickly advanced to the position of research scientist. Throughout his tenure at OpenAI, he contributed to several significant projects, including GPT-3, DALL-E 2, Jukebox, and Glow.

Dhariwal’s journey from a talented student in Pune to a key architect of one of the most advanced AI models underscores the potential for innovation and excellence in the field of artificial intelligence.
